PROGRAM & SPEAKERS

“Religion vs. Morality” by Andrew Bernstein

For thousands of years, and continuing to this day, many people believe(d) that religion is the necessary foundation of morality. But the exact opposite is true. Adherence to religion makes impossible a proper, rational, life-promoting morality; this is true of any and every religion, of religion as such. Religion inexorably opposes every principle and requirement of flourishing human life on earth—and, for these reasons, must be recognized as an unmitigated evil. Simply stated, religion is hazardous to your health. This talk proves that principle.

Dr. Bernstein teaches philosophy at SUNY Purchase, is a contributing editor of The Objective Standard, and is the author of numerous books and a regular column at Forbes.com.

“Can the World Return to the Gold Standard? If So, How?” by Richard M. Salsman

For the past forty years the world’s paper monies have had no relation to gold (real money) – unlike the prior forty centuries. As a result, the size and scope of government has expanded enormously, money-banking-debt crises have proliferated, the cost of living has sky-rocketed, and economies have stagnated. In this talk Mr. Salsman explains why sixty nations converged on the gold standard in the decades before WWI, how that system performed, and its moral-political prerequisites. He discusses how and why this system was lost entirely by 1971, and concludes with answers to these questions: Can we ever return to the gold standard?  If so, how could it be done? Must we also “end the Fed?” If so, how?

Mr. Salsman is president of InterMarket Forecasting Inc., a contributing editor of The Objective Standard, and author of “The Capitalist,” column at Forbes.com.

“What Principles Are and Why We Need Them” by Craig Biddle

“What are principles? Why does man need them?” These questions are the subject of the first chapter of Mr. Biddle’s book in progress, “Thinking in Principles: The Science of Selfishness.” His lecture, based on material from the book, will zero in on the nature of principles, specifying their essential characteristics, identifying the dual standard of validity by which principles are properly assessed, discussing key principles that form the base of the science of thinking in principles, and concretizing, with a wide variety of examples, the fact that principles are crucial tools for thinking and thus living.

Mr. Biddle is the editor of The Objective Standard and the author of Loving Life: The Morality of Self-Interest and the Facts that Support It, a highly concretized, systematic introduction to Ayn Rand’s ethics.
